United Just Made It Easier to Fly Nonstop to These 10 International Destinations

United Airlines is launching its biggest international expansion yet, with 10 new cities and additional routes to Europe and Asia starting in 2027.
United Airlines announced the largest international route network expansion in its history on Tuesday. The announcement included 10 new international cities and three routes between existing cities on its network for the Spring and Summer of 2027. The new service includes one city in Japan, two each in Italy, France, and Spain, and one in Luxembourg, Portugal, and Slovenia. United will also add nonstop flights to Okinawa, Japan, from San Francisco.
With the exception of Olbia and Catania, Italy, United will be the only airline with nonstop service to each of the cities from the United States.
“The creative and strategic way we’ve expanded our international network since the pandemic has made all the difference, not only for our customers and employees, but also as a way to differentiate United and build a brand focused on customers,” said Scott Kirby, CEO of United Airlines, in a statement provided to Fodor’s. “We offer the most flights across the Atlantic and Pacific, and Newark is the best Atlantic gateway in the country–so far this year, it’s the most on-time airport in the New York City area. We’re going to keep building on that momentum as we welcome the new A321XLR to our fleet and continue to elevate the travel experience for every customer who chooses United.”
Here’s what to know about the new flights:
Most of Them Are Summer-Only
The new destinations in Europe include Catania (Sicily) and Olbia (Sardinia), Italy; Ibiza and Valencia, Spain; Ljubljana, Slovenia; Luxembourg; Marseille and Toulouse, France; and Terceira, Portugal. Summer seasonal service for most of these destinations will end in September or October; Luxembourg is the only new city that will be served year-round. This can present logistical challenges for travelers traveling near the beginning or end of the nonstop seasons. Additional connections from these cities are typically available on United’s Star Alliance partner airlines, such as Lufthansa and SWISS, for dates the nonstop flight won’t operate.
Few of Them Are Daily
Travelers will want to pay attention to which days of the week they book their flights. Only Newark to Luxembourg, Washington Dulles to Toulouse, and Newark to Marseille are offered daily. The remainder of the flights will be flown three or four times a week. So, if a nonstop option doesn’t come up in a web search, check a day on either side, or be prepared to make a connection via a Star Alliance partner in Europe.
Many Flights Are on Smaller Aircraft
Many of the new flights will be operated onboard narrow-body aircraft, rather than the larger widebody aircraft common on many of United’s intercontinental services. Flights to Luxembourg, Toulouse, Ibiza, Valencia, and Marseille will be operated onboard United’s new Airbus A321XLR aircraft (which features a United Polaris cabin with lie-flat seats, and United Premium Plus in addition to United Economy). The flight to Terceira, in Portugal’s Azores Islands will be flown by a Boeing 737 MAX 8 (which does not have lie-flat seats) and the United First cabin on that aircraft will be sold as Premium Plus, United’s long haul international Premium Economy cabin; there will be no United Business or United Polaris Business offered on that flight.
The Airbus A321XLR is a new addition to United’s fleet. The aircraft will offer a new United Polaris suite with a closing privacy door, free Starlink Wi-Fi for Mileage Plus members, a new snack bar in United Economy, and a row of Economy Plus seats with a blocked middle seat.
The longer flights, including those to Ljubljana, Olbia, and Catania, will be operated by widebody Boeing 767-300 or Boeing 767-400 aircraft, which also have a United Polaris cabin with lie-flat seats in addition. The much longer Transpacific flight to Okinawa will be operated three times weekly onboard a Boeing 777-200ER.
United Is Also Expanding Flights to Existing Destinations
Not all the flights will be brand new cities for United. In the Summer of 2027, United will also add a new nonstop from Denver to Paris; from Washington Dulles to Milan; and from Los Angeles to Osaka, Japan. United will also restart nonstop flights from San Francisco to Tel Aviv, Israel.

As a boutique hotel lover, every mansion stay I spy in Roma makes me want to check in, and nothing pleases me more than charting a hunger-slaying course around its street food stalls.

Get Your Chuckle On

While museums tell you where the city has been, comedians tell you where it is now. Spending an evening at an English Comedy MX show offers a crash course in contemporary Mexico City, delivered one punchline at a time. Through jokes about dating, bureaucracy, tacos and cultural faux pas, local and visiting comedians unpack the city’s personality in a way that’s both entertaining and revealing, and it’s an ideal activity for solo travelers. Shows take place in venues such as Whiskey Kitchen by Hot Mamma’s and Woko Comedy Club.

Feel Alive on Day of The Dead
Fun fact: Mexico City’s massive Day of the Dead parade only began in 2016, inspired by the James Bond film Spectre, which opened with a fictional version of such a parade. Now, every year, Paseo de la Reforma and Zócalo fill with flower-draped floats, stilt walkers dressed as skeletons, and revelers aplenty during El Gran Desfile del Día de los Muertos. Beyond the parade, you can stroll the historic center to admire alebrije sculptures or head to Xochimilco for a haunting boat ride performance of La Llorona (The Weeping Woman).
It all unfolds from late October through early November, peaking on November 2. This sacred holiday honors deceased loved ones, with families building ofrendas (altars) at home adorned with candles, water, food, photos, sugar skulls, incense, and cempasúchil marigolds said to guide souls home.

Lucha Libre Masked Mayhem
WHERE: Multiple Locations
Lucha Libre is a quintessentially Mexican masked wrestling spectacle that blends sport, theater, and tradition. If you’re keen to experience it for yourself, you’ve got two venues to choose from: Arena Coliseo and Arena México. Also known as “El Embudo de Perú 77,” Arena Coliseo opened first in 1943, offering a smaller, more old-school atmosphere near Tepito. Arena México is the city’s largest and most famous wrestling venue, seating up to 16,500 in Colonia Doctores.
You can get your Lucha Libre tickets on Ticketmaster, but I’d recommend booking a tour so that your transportation is covered and you’re with a guide who can help you navigate the experience comfortably. Wherever you’re seated, you’ll join families, superfans, and first-timers all cheering, booing, and laughing as masked luchadores somersault through acrobatic battles.

Conduct a Roma Reconnaissance
WHERE: Roma
Equal parts elegant residential enclave and creative playground, Roma is a tree-lined neighborhood that rewards aimless wandering more than almost anywhere else in the capital. On such walks, architectural treasures reveal themselves around almost every corner, from ornate French-inspired façades commissioned during the Porfirian era to elegant Art Deco apartment buildings that survived earthquakes and changing fashions.
Roma is split between the bustling Roma Norte, the quieter Roma Sur, and La Romita. There is great pleasure to be found in ducking into its charming bookshops (Cafebrería El Péndulo Roma is a welcoming café and bookstore hybrid), discovering curiosities at its museums (Museo Casa de las Mil Muñecas and MODO Museo del Objeto del Objeto are wonderfully eccentric), lingering over tea or coffee at its cafés (try Libertario Coffee Roasters), exploring its tastes (do bite into the famous guava roll at Panadería Rosetta), and watching one of the city’s best-dressed neighborhoods go about its day.

The Mega Library of All Libraries
WHERE: Colonia Buenavista
Biblioteca Vasconcelos can compete with the world’s most visually arresting libraries, like Porto’s Livraria Lello or Rio de Janeiro’s Real Gabinete Português de Leitura. Its vast, cathedral-like interior is a geometric wonder with glass walkways and cantilevered bookshelves that create the sensation of hovering in midair—a thrilling experience for some, but potentially nerve-jangling for those with a fear of heights. Adding to the surreal atmosphere, a reconstructed whale skeleton hangs dramatically in the central corridor. The sculpture is a permanent installation designed by Gabriel Orozco titled Mobile Matrix.
Located in the Buenavista neighborhood near an uber-busy transport hub, this monumental space was designed by architect Alberto Kalach and opened in 2006 with a rocky start (it closed soon after for repairs). While it’s officially a national lending library with over 600,000 books, Biblioteca Vasconcelos is as much a lively social space as it is a scholarly one. You’ll find students hunched over laptops, families plucking books off the shelves, musicians and dancers practicing routines, and friends deep in conversation around communal tables.

Things to Avoid: Not Venturing Beyond Tacos
I am a devoted worshipper at the altar of tacos, but limiting yourself to them would be a missed opportunity. The streets of Mexico City have so much more on offer if you’re willing to explore.
From dawn until dusk, vendors tempt passersby with elotes and esquites (corn salad in a cup), chicharrónes (crispy pork skin), stuffed-to-the-brim quesadillas, tostadas (crispy tortillas piled with toppings), tamales wrapped in corn husks, tortas (hearty sandwiches), and even Dorilocos, Nacho Cheese Doritos with unexpected toppings like peanuts, gummy bears, carrots, and lime. You’ll find sizzling tlayudas (Oaxacan pizza-like loaded tortillas), plump gorditas (stuffed thick corn masa pockets), camote carts (sweet potato and plantains with condensed milk), and chilaquiles dripping in chili sauce for breakfast. Adventurous eaters can snack on chapulines (crunchy grasshoppers) and even worms at cantinas downtown. The variety is simply staggering.

Things to Avoid: Only Visiting TikTok-Famous Restaurants
Instead of spending your precious time in CDMX in a queue because you saw something go viral on TikTok or Instagram, let your eyes be the reviewer and go toward places that call you with their scents, sounds, and ambience.
Staying in Roma Norte during my most recent trip, I’d always see hordes lining up and loitering around TikTok-famous Mi Compa Chava Marisquería in the hopes of getting a table. Meanwhile, there’s a perfectly decent seafood restaurant in the form of Mony Mariscos just across the street. Taquería El Califa de León may be super popular due to winning a Michelin star in 2024, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be the best taco of your life, or even surpass the taco purchased at an informal stall with no Google presence at all.
INSIDER TIP
Don’t automatically expect that the green salsa you see at a taquería is guacamole. It might be an avocado salsa with added serrano peppers or jalapeños. If your spice tolerance is low, ask if the sauce has a kick by saying, “¿ Se pica?”

Things to Avoid: Letting Traffic Dictate Your Days
If you’re planning to spend most of your Mexico City trip exploring Roma, Condesa, and Centro Histórico, stay nearby if you can. You might think you’re saving money by booking a less costly apartment further afield, but you’ll often spend the difference on Ubers and taxis, especially if you don’t plan to use public transport. What should have been a 30-minute journey once took me two hours by car at 8 pm. Mexico City’s traffic can be brutal, so group your itinerary by neighborhood, not by attraction. You’ll spend less time staring out of a car window and more time getting down to the good stuff.

Must-Try Restaurants: La Capital
WHERE: La Condesa
La Capital set the bar high as my very first introduction to Mexico City’s culinary scene. I thoroughly believe that every category is done exceptionally well, but even if just the starters made up the menu, it would still be impressive. Octopus tostado or roasted cauliflower with mole, anyone? On the mains front, this is a surefire place to find Chiles en Nogada when Mexican Independence Day comes around in September.
Located on Avenida Nuevo León in Condesa, La Capital has lofty ceilings and occupies two expansive floors. My preferred table is always upstairs in the top right corner from where I can adequately people-watch. On weekend evenings, the atmosphere feels bustling but never boisterous. Beer lovers should order a bottle of their very own Capitalager.

Must-Try Restaurants: Madre Café
WHERE: Roma Norte
Madre Café is a destination restaurant in Mexico City and one of my favorite afternoon hangouts. Located on Calle Orizaba in Roma Norte, it is housed in a 1932-built stately mansion that has seen many lives, from a family residence to film archive offices.
Come any day, and you’ll find something worth savoring. Breakfast offers everything from red berry pancakes to Eggs Benedict with gravlax, while lunch and dinner stretch from hearty arrachera tacos to portobello burgers and grilled salmon with Greek salad. Their inventive cocktail list keeps things interesting with mezcalitas infused with hibiscus or morita chile, lychee spritzes, and a seven-strong lineup of carajillos, including the horchata and brownie versions, which will appeal to the sweet-toothed among us.
An early look at 2027 hotel performance projections reveals impact of GDP growth, event calendars
Easter shift will affect March hotel data, and 2026 FIFA World Cup will affect June numbers

NASHVILLE, Tennessee — Despite an extended period of stubborn U.S. inflation, consumers and travelers haven't yet recoiled from higher prices, and that's a good sign for hotel forecasting for 2027.
A major positive is that U.S. salary growth continues to outperform inflation, said Jake Bruno, senior forecasting analyst at STR, CoStar's hospitality analytics firm. That's a good sign for consumers and for hotel demand stability across the country.
“Households continue to move up the combined salary ladder. … U.S. households continue to be better off,” Bruno said during a presentation at the 18th Hotel Data Conference.
The portion of U.S. households that have a combined income of $200,000 or more is growing, and that bracket constitutes 25% of U.S. travel spend, Bruno said.
On the other side of the equation, credit-card delinquency is up year over year, which normally has a negative effect on low-end hotel demand.
“A 1% increase in 90-day credit-card delinquency equals a 40-basis-point decline in economy hotels overall,” he said.
But the rise or fall of U.S. gross domestic product has a sizable impact on U.S. hotel performance. STR and Tourism Economics predict 2026 GDP to end the year up 2.3%, while in 2027, GDP is forecast to rise 2.7%. Meanwhile, U.S. inflation is likely to move in the opposite direction, from a full-year rate of 3.2% in 2026 to up 2.4% in 2027.
What's also helping U.S. hotel performance is that group and corporate bookings are more predictable than transient demand, and these demand drivers are back, Bruno said.
That is more than can be said for international inbound demand, which “is messy, regional and uncertain,” he added.
“Where we have seen positive [international inbound] numbers, it is typically less than 1%. Inbound travelers disproportionately stay in upper-end hotels," Bruno said.
Supply dip and a tougher summer comparison
U.S. hotel construction continues to slow, and STR projects U.S. hotel supply to grow 0.4% year over year in 2026 and 0.6% in 2027. In fact, U.S. hotel construction is at its lowest volume in 12 years.
Year over year, San Francisco leads the way with hotel rooms in construction, but its growth comes from a low base stemming from its doldrums following the COVID-19 pandemic.

The majority of the top 25 U.S. hotel markets are outpacing inflation, but that is not indicative of the entire nation, Bruno said. Only 42% of all markets are doing the same, he added.
Again, group and corporate business are responsible for this healthier demand, but that rebound has only been around since February 2026. AI and data center activity are now major metrics movers, he said.
Overall, U.S. hotel average daily rate in 2027 is predicted to remain below the inflation rate and dampened by the metrics effects generated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Bruno said.
Luxury hotels should continue to thrive next year, but Bruno said the upscale segment is expected to have flat occupancy and consistent ADR.
“On a monthly breakdown, occupancy is expected to grow through 2027 because of reduced supply and more moderated demand. [The first quarter] is going to be strong, specifically on the rate side,” he said.
And next year will see calendar shifts of holidays and weekend days, with March performance likely to show differences in its 2027 year-over-year numbers.
“This is due to two reasons. First, we saw a bit of an overperformance outside of just the recovery [in 2026], and [in 2027] we are seeing Easter shift from April to March … which is going to affect business travel during that time,” he said. “Quarters two and three are heavily affected by the World Cup. June's forecasted U.S. topline revenue per available room [is down 0.8%]. During that time, occupancy is expected to grow, but because the World Cup put such an emphasis on rate and was an ADR-driven event, there has to be some expectation of a pullback [in 2027], even though we expect actual natural structural growth on top of that."
