U.S. Visa Applicants Can Now Pay $750 for an Interview Within 10 Business Days
The State Department is testing a new paid option that allows some applicants for U.S. tourist and business visas to schedule an interview within 10 business days. The expedited appointment costs $750 on top of the standard $185 visa application fee and is available only when participating diplomatic posts have open slots. The pilot runs through December 31, 2026.
The program is currently offered at U.S. embassies and consulates throughout Canada and Mexico, as well as the U.S. embassies in Bogotá, Guatemala City, San José, and Tegucigalpa. Additional locations could be added before the pilot ends.
Applicants must first pay the regular application fee and have a future interview scheduled before the paid-expedite option becomes available. Once an expedited appointment is booked, it cannot be rescheduled. The $750 payment is nonrefundable and nontransferable, and applicants who cancel or fail to appear lose the fee. Crucially, paying for an earlier interview does not speed up visa processing or improve an applicant’s chances of approval.

Indonesia Sends 20 Tons of Earthquake Aid to Labuan Bajo
Indonesia has stepped up its response to the 7.7-magnitude earthquake in East Nusa Tenggara, deploying military personnel to assist with evacuations, medical services, food distribution, and emergency shelters. Troops from the IX/Udayana Military Command have been working in affected communities since the disaster began.
Defense Minister Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin arrived at Komodo Airport in Labuan Bajo on Tuesday as the military expanded its relief operation. The minister and Indonesian Armed Forces also dispatched 20 tons of humanitarian supplies from Jakarta to Labuan Bajo, including ready-to-eat food, tents, blankets, diapers, sanitary products, solar panels, water-purification equipment, and satellite internet gear.
Labuan Bajo, a popular tourism hub on the western tip of Flores, is the main gateway to UNESCO-listed Komodo National Park, where travelers come to see Komodo dragons, visit islands including Padar and Komodo, and explore the region’s beaches and marine life.
Military officials say personnel are gathering information about local needs while operating evacuation posts, health facilities, and field kitchens. Injured residents are also being transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Settlement Ends Atlanta Airport Search Program Challenged by Comedians
Comedians Eric André and Clayton English have settled their federal lawsuit against Clayton County over a police drug-interdiction program at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. The agreement confirms that the county has discontinued the program and says it does not intend to bring it back. The county admitted no wrongdoing or liability.
André and English sued in 2022 after being stopped separately by Clayton County officers as they prepared to board flights. Both men, who are Black, alleged that they had been targeted because of their race and questioned about drugs in front of other passengers. As part of the settlement, the county agreed that officers assigned to the airport will wear body cameras and receive training on the constitutional limits of police encounters with travelers. The county also approved a $30,000 payment, divided equally between the two comedians.
Records cited in the lawsuit showed 402 jet-bridge stops between August 2020 and April 2021. Of the 378 passengers whose race was recorded, 211—or 56%—were Black. Those stops produced three reported drug seizures and more than $1 million in cash and money orders from 25 passengers; only two people were ultimately charged.

Carnival Cruise Ship Tilts During Sudden Maneuver on Mississippi River
Passengers aboard Carnival Valor got an unexpected jolt as the ship neared New Orleans at the end of a four-night Western Caribbean cruise. The vessel briefly listed to one side while traveling on the Mississippi River, sending water out of a swimming pool and across portions of the deck. Videos posted by passengers captured water rushing through the area.
One passenger who recorded the incident said the captain had made a sharp turn after encountering a cargo vessel that had reportedly lost power and was sitting dark in the river. Carnival Cruise Line has not confirmed that account. The company said movements of this kind can occur during normal navigation and that it was reviewing the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Crew members responded immediately, and several guests who requested medical attention were assisted. No serious injuries or damage to the ship were reported, and Carnival Valor continued operating normally.

81-Year-Old Man Admits to 1994 Killing of American Tourist in Germany
More than three decades after American tourist Amy Lopez was killed while visiting Germany, an 81-year-old man has admitted responsibility for her death. The defendant acknowledged the crime Tuesday as his murder trial opened in Koblenz, where Lopez was killed in September 1994.
Prosecutors say the man, who was 49 at the time, lured the 24-year-old tourist into a secluded room at Ehrenbreitstein Fortress under false pretenses. They accuse him of restraining and sexually assaulting Lopez before killing her. Children playing nearby found her body shortly afterward.
The case remained unresolved for decades until investigators used newer forensic techniques to reexamine preserved DNA evidence. Traces associated with Lopez’s waistband and thigh were eventually linked to the suspect, according to German news agency DPA. Authorities arrested him at a nursing home in the Koblenz area in February. Eight trial days are scheduled, with a verdict expected in September.
What can make or break a hotel’s next corporate account?
https://hotelsmag.com/news/what-can-make-or-break-a-hotels-next-corporate-account/?
Story contributed by JoAnna Abrams, CEO, and Andrea Foster, EVP, Development–Hospitality, Mindclick.
Earlier this year, HOTELS published Amadeus’ playbook for standing out in corporate travel RFP season. Joerg Schuler, EVP of hospitality commercial at Amadeus, made a notable point: start with data. His three closing principles—show up informed, stay visible, never stop paying attention—are how top sellers work an account. We would extend that to the column growing fastest on the corporate buyer’s scorecard: health and wellness, environmental responsibility and impact.
Know Your Customer
Leading with data starts before the negotiation with understanding what the account values. Corporate buyers increasingly publish their own health, wellness and environmental commitments. Read them closely: they are a specification brief hiding in plain sight.
We saw this at a branded hotel in a major U.S. metro market, where Mindclick supported a renovation that specifically targeted a nearby, high-value account, which published language on “new standards in health, wellness and sustainability.” Rather than invent criteria, we renovated to the client’s own words, category by category.
The metrics are real: Ten of 14 guestroom categories are responsibly sourced and 60% of the FF&E budget is verified for health, wellness, and responsible sourcing. But they are only the entry point. It is the choices behind those numbers that capture a buyer’s attention. Touring the property, the account’s VP singled out alignment: carpet woven from reclaimed fishing nets mirroring the recycled-content standard her own company specifies and active air-cleaning in every room. Data starts the conversation; the verified health and wellness story of how the hotel got there brings it to life.
Why Travel Buyers are Asking
This is not a niche preference but a procurement requirement driven by several forces at once.
Regulation is one. Corporate buyers’ RFP criteria are increasingly shaped by the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), which pushes global companies to account for value-chain emissions—business travel among them—and to ask their hotels for the data.
But the pull runs deeper than compliance. Wellness is now a roughly $7 trillion global business, and travelers are buying it, especially in lifestyle, upper-upscale and resort segments. Companies and their customers expect the spaces where they sleep, work and meet to support well-being and that’s the story verified data allows a hotel to tell.
Distribution is another. OTAs and search surface hotels’ environmental performance (Booking.com and Google display it alongside price and location) and agentic AI travel search will accelerate it.
Procurement platforms are a third. The Alō index, a sustainability rating a Fortune 500 company uses for employee travel booking, is adding hotels and buyers to its platform, putting a verified rating into the booking decision. The spend follows: One major corporate retailer recently dropped five hotels across five markets for low sustainability performance, shifting an average of $260,000 per hotel to higher-rated properties.
Buyers tell us, too. In Mindclick’s interviews with corporate travel buyers across airlines, consumer products, financial services, pharmaceuticals, and retail, roughly 15% to 20% of hotel selection now turns on environmental and impact data—often the margin between winning and losing.
Win More RFPs
Schuler’s framing points to the opportunity: If a fifth of the decision turns on environmental responsibility and impact, a hotel that can answer confidently—and prove it—has an edge competitors cannot easily match.
The proof lives in a hotel’s supply chain. Every product in a renovation and in daily purchasing carries health and environmental attributes that mostly go unsurfaced. Verify at the point of purchase, and a compliance file becomes sales content. In our case study, the documentation that met ownership’s reporting obligation became a tool the director of sales could walk a client through. Their senior director of sales put it this way: “Following the renovation, we shifted our sales narrative. Previously, we sold primarily on location, brand reliability, and standard Midtown comfort. Now, we market the hotel as a flexible, wellness-focused, third-party verified eco-retreat designed for modern corporate and bleisure travelers. Instead of just selling a room, we are now selling well-being, spatial versatility, and verifiable corporate social responsibility (CSR).”
Those are verified, guest-language claims a salesperson can make without checking with anyone: Schuler’s three principles through an impact lens. Show up informed about an account’s published commitments; stay visible wherever buyers look, from RFP responses to rating platforms; and never stop paying attention—the signed contract isn’t the finish line, but the starting gun.
Standards keep evolving, and hotels treating verified performance as a living asset, not a one-time cost, keep winning.
A 32-Year Monopoly Is Ending in Europe — and Travelers May Be the Big Winners
Eurostar/Eurail Group
https://www.fodors.com/world/europe/experiences/news/virgin-trains-could-challenge-eurostar-and-lower-europe-fares
Virgin Trains could launch a London-to-Europe rail service by 2030, ending Eurostar’s 32-year monopoly and potentially lowering fares for travelers.
Travel between London and Amsterdam, Brussels, and Paris could be cheaper in the next few years if Virgin Trains is successful in its bid to begin a new rail service to challenge the monopoly held by the current operator, Eurostar.
Britain’s Office of Rail and Road (ORR) has approved Virgin’s request to run services between London’s St. Pancras Station and the entrance to the Channel Tunnel from 2030 to 2040. The approval isn’t the final hurdle; Virgin must still get approval from both the Channel Tunnel itself and the rail networks in France, Belgium, and the Netherlands.
If ultimately successful, Virgin’s bid would end the 32-year monopoly Eurostar has held on passenger rail service via the tunnel. Eurostar has been the only approved operator for passenger services through the tunnel since it opened in 1994 (another operator has the license to transport vehicles). Formerly owned by private British corporations and the British government, a majority stake was sold to the French rail operator SNCF.
Virgin Trains was a brand name used on a pair of rail networks in the U.K. until 2019. The company does not currently operate any rail services in the U.K. or Europe, but the introduction of a competitor to the monopoly Eurostar service is likely to have an impact on fares.
Virgin had planned to rebrand the Florida-based Brightline service as Virgin Trains in the United States in 2018, but Brightline canceled the deal in 2020 following the end of Virgin Trains services in the U.K. and the pandemic-related bankruptcy of Virgin Atlantic Airways. Brightline reasoned that Virgin had “ceased to constitute a brand of international high repute, largely because of matters related to the pandemic.” Virgin sued for damages and won $115 million from Brightline.
Eurostar currently operates from London St. Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord in two hours and 16 minutes. The service to Brussels-Midi takes an hour and 53 minutes, while the service to Amsterdam Centraal takes just over four hours. Other lines also operate to Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport, Marne-la-Vallee-Chessy for Disneyland Paris, and to Cologne, Düsseldorf, and Dortmund, Germany.
Last year, Virgin was granted access to a rail depot currently used by Eurostar to maintain and store trains operating on the route between St. Pancras and the Channel Tunnel.
A study from late 2024 found Eurostar to be one of the worst-performing rail services in Europe when compared by fare levels, on-time reliability, and ease of getting refunds. Eurostar disputed the results of that study.
Virgin has not yet acquired trainsets. Its previous U.K. rail services were operated under a licensing agreement. In October 2025, Virgin Group owner Richard Branson told Politico the company had plans to acquire 12 trainsets from the French rail manufacturer Alstom. Alstom manufactures much of the high-speed rail equipment for many operators, including France’s SNCF, Eurostar, Italy’s Trenitalia, and Amtrak’s new Next Gen Acela trains. It’s estimated Virgin’s journey times would be similar to Eurostar’s current services, but that depends on the rail access it’s ultimately able to secure for operations.
Access to the Channel Tunnel is managed and operated by the company Getlink. A binational safety authority between France and the United Kingdom monitors safety and operational regulations inside the nearly 31-and-a-half-mile underground tunnel running beneath the waters of the English Channel.
More than 18 million passengers traveled via the Channel Tunnel in 2024, roughly the same number that made the crossing by sea.
