In 2026, destinations around the world are expected to see a boon to visitors thanks to some of the biggest new television shows and movies hitting screens this year and next.

In its annual Unpack '26 report that tracks trends in the travel industry, Expedia Group revealed that 81% of millennial and Gen Z travelers plan their trips inspired by shows and movies, making the "set-jetting" phenomenon a potential $8 billion industry in the U.S. alone.

With over half of travelers saying their desire to take a set-jetting trip has increased, the report highlights several destinations featured in recent and upcoming productions. Expedia also outlined places to stay and activities to book to get an experience fit for the screens.

Peloponnese, Greece

Inspired by: "The Odyssey," which premieres on July 17, 2026.

Suggested stays: Nido, Mar-Bella Collection; W Costa Navarino; and Dreams Corfu Resort & Spa

The most epic of the 2026 releases is easily the star-studded adaptation of "The Odyssey," directed and produced by Christopher Nolan. In addition to playing celebrity spotting while watching the movie, viewers can also expect to be captivated by the stunning views of the Peloponnese region in Greece, where the majority of the film takes place. The Unpack report suggests olive oil tasting, scuba diving, hiking and more for travelers looking to create their own Grecian odyssey.

Palawan, Philippines

Inspired by: "The Last Resort," which is expected to premiere in February 2026.

Suggested stays: Cauyan Island Resort, Pangulasian Island Resort and Lihim Resorts

Next year's hottest romantic comedy is expected to draw travelers to the southeastern Philippines island of Palawan. The tropical paradise was the filming location for "The Last Resort," as well as the inspiration for the story itself, which includes a woman traveling to the island and falling in love — with the beauty of the region and a love interest. Expedia suggests booking a catamaran cruise and hidden lagoon tour as well as enjoying the beaches of El Nido.

Yorkshire, U.K.

Inspired by: "Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale," which premiered on Sept. 12, 2025, and "Wuthering Heights," which premieres on Feb. 13, 2026.

Suggested staysEsseborne Manor Hotel (where the "Downtown Abbey" cast stayed), the Sandford Springs Hotel & Golf ClubSimonstone Hall (where the "Wuthering Heights" cast stayed) and The Old Registry Haworth

Yorkshire has a double whammy of productions shining a spotlight on it. Longtime "Downton Abbey" fans can bring to life their early 1900s manor home day dreams by visiting the North England town on a trip that celebrates the conclusion of the TV series with Highclere Castle tours and Cotswolds countryside drives. The region should see more visitors next year once director Emerald Fennell's adaptation of "Wuthering Heights" premieres in February. Fans can visit the Bronte Parsonage Museum or take a scenic train ride through the Dales.

Hawaii and Samoa, Polynesia

Inspired by: The new live action "Moana," which premieres July 10, 2026

Suggested stays: Hilton Moorea Lagoon Resort & Spa, The Kahala Hotel & Resort Hawaii and Sofitel Kia Ora Moorea Beach Resort

"Moana" is the latest Disney character to get a live-action adaptation on the big screens, and once the new film releases this summer, Expedia predicts both Hawaii and Samoa to be hot destinations. Hawaiian shores and luscious greenery has been seen on screens plenty, so visitors can also catch Jurassic Park tours while on island too.

Paris

Inspired by: "Emily in Paris," which premieres on Dec. 18, 2025

Suggested staysHotel Plaza AthénéeLe Meurice and Grand-Hôtel du Cap-Ferrat

"Emily in Paris" has captivated Francophiles since its first season that released in 2020, but with the newest season dropping as an early Christmas present this year, Expedia expects travelers to pack their chicest bags and head to the City of Light. Suggested activities include a croissant baking class and an unofficial Emily in Paris tour that takes fans through filming locations in the city.

Dalmatian Coast, New Orleans and Barcelona

Inspired by: "People We Meet on Vacation," which premieres on Jan. 9, 2026

Suggested staysHotel Monteleone in New Orleans and Nobu Hotel Barcelona

Another Netflix title, "People We Meet on Vacation" is sure to inspire wanderlust in all who tune in. The movie, based on the bestselling novel of the same name, was filmed at a handful of destinations that the characters travel to. To bring the movie — or book — alive, Expedia suggests taking a classic car across the coast of Croatia, hopping aboard a riverboat jazz cruise in New Orleans or joining a food tour in Barcelona.

Wellington, New Zealand

Inspired by: "Avatar: Fire and Ash," which premieres Dec. 19, 2025

Suggested staysOhtel WellingtonSofitel Wellington and The Intrepid Hotel

New Zealand has been captured in a few fictional fandoms already, and the Avatar empire is just the latest. The new movie's live action shots were filmed in tandem with the previous title, "The Way of Water," between 2017 and 2020, in New Zealand. Expedia's recommended activities include getting to know the food and wildlife of the region and indulging in some "Lord of the Rings" tours as well.

Hawaii, Italy, and Thailand

Inspired by: "The White Lotus," which premiered its season three Feb. 16, 2025

Suggested staysSan Domenico Palace, TaorminaFour Seasons Maui at Wailea; and Rosewood Phuket

"The White Lotus" will always reign supreme when it comes to set jetting. Tourists can get their own luxury experience by visiting any of the real Four Seasons locations where the first three seasons were filmed in Hawaii, Italy and Thailand, respectively. Some of the unique, as-seen-on-TV experiences Expedia recommends is catching a Muay Thai boxing match in Thailand and a semi-private dolphin watch tour in Maui.

Tuscany, Italy

Inspired by: "Jay Kelly," which premiered on Nov. 14, 2025

Suggested staysMonteverdi TuscanyLa Bandita Townhouse Hotel and ADLER Spa Resort THERMAE

Directed by Noah Baumbach, Jay Kelly is predicted to continue to inspire trips to Tuscany in 2026. The movie stars George Clooney and Adam Sandler and takes place across Italy and other European destinations. Expedia's report finds that travelers can make their own movie star moments with wine tastings and spa treatments across the region.

Los Angeles

Inspired by: "Nobody Wants This," which premiered its season two on Oct. 23, 2025.

Suggested staysThe Garland or 1 Hotel West Hollywood

Los Angeles is not quite an understated travel destination, but the fan-favorite Netflix show, "Nobody Wants This," starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, might be sparking a renewed interest in the California city. Playing off the flirty romance of the TV show, Expedia's report suggested a romantic helicopter tour at sunset or a peek behind the cameras with a Warner Bros. Studio Tour to create a trip to Los Angeles worthy of the show.

Quit Your Job and Move Abroad With These 10 Gigs That Will Let You Live Anywhere

Quia Bethea

Top up your bank account while you travel.

Whether you’re relocating abroad, slow-traveling through new cities, or simply craving independence, earning money from anywhere is more possible than ever. While some careers can be fully remote, others are portable skills you can do in your very own neighborhood or carry across borders. Together, they create opportunities to build a flexible lifestyle that provides an additional stream of income wherever you are. This list highlights 10 ways to earn anywhere. While many require existing skills, a portfolio, or certifications, each can be scaled into a sustainable income stream for years to come.

Also note that before you work abroad, check with an immigration attorney to verify your work status requirements. While some countries may allow remote work or provide “digital nomad” visas, other types of work, such as service jobs, may be prohibited.

Freelance Writing

Freelance writing is one of the most flexible remote careers. Writers create articles, blog posts, or brand copy from anywhere. I’ll let you in on two little secrets. One, you’re reading the words of a freelance writer, and two, it’s absolutely something you can do, too. If you love storytelling, freelance writing is a versatile, location-independent hustle. You can write travel features from your hostel bunk, draft blog posts in a café, or create copy for brands while lounging on a beach. Success depends on building a niche and a portfolio. Beginners often start on platforms like Fiverr or Upwork, while experienced writers pitch directly to publications. My first article was commissioned after an editor from a lifestyle magazine came across my blog, which focused on living abroad. I also wrote blog posts and email copy for local business owners who read my articles. These commissions supplemented my part-time teaching salary while living abroad.

Beginner: $0.03–$0.10 per word ($30–$100 per article)

Monthly potential: $500–$5,000+

Upskill: SEO and marketing courses (Coursera, Copyblogger, HubSpot, writing workshops)

Language Teaching and Tutoring

You can teach from anywhere with a quiet corner, a good headset, and excellent time management skills. Online language teaching connects you with students worldwide. Platforms like iTalki, Magic Ears Teacher, Preply, and VIPKid, provide flexible scheduling. On the other hand, Cambly allows you to have more casual conversations with young or mature students. TEFL/TESOL certifications will increase your credibility and pay. You can even tutor others in your community. I tutored youth and teachers as a side hustle while living in Spain before transitioning to online teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. These experiences also provided supplemental income for me while living abroad.

Teach on platforms (iTalki, Preply): $8–$25/hour

Independent teachers or tutors: $20–$60/hour

Monthly potential: $80–$1,500+

Coaching and Consulting

You don’t need a huge following or fancy credentials to start coaching—just expertise and the willingness to help someone level up. Coaches guide individuals in career, wellness, or finance, while consultants solve business challenges. Popular consulting niches include starting a business, IT or visa assistance, and even relocation strategy. Certifications are not required, but they certainly help to build trust. Above all, success depends on expertise, empathy, and problem-solving ability.

Beginner: $40–$75/hour

Monthly potential: $160–$1,500+

Upskill: Attend seminars and workshops in your field of interest, IFC (International Coaching Federation) programs, free courses on Coursera, Alison, and low-cost courses on LinkedIn Learning.

Translation

Multilingual professionals can earn by translating books, documents, and websites. Specialized fields like health, legal, and technology pay more. Start with freelance platforms, then move into agencies or direct contacts. I had a colleague who translated announcements and documents for small business owners in Spain. She was a native English speaker who majored in Spanish.

Beginner: $0.04–$0.10 per word

Monthly potential: $1,000–$2,500+

Upskill: CAT tool training (SDL Trados, MemoQ).

Virtual Assistant

Virtual assistants are the behind-the-scenes superheroes helping entrepreneurs, small businesses, and creators stay organized. Tasks range from scheduling and inbox management to social posting and basic bookkeeping. It’s flexible, quick to learn, and in high demand. This is a wonderful role for the highly organized and intuitive. I have an administrative background and have received many inquiries for this sort of role. For just a few hours a week and access to internet you can make a world of difference in someone’s professional life.

Beginner: $15–$25/hour

Monthly potential: $800–$2,000+

Upskill: Project management or social media strategy courses

Digital Marketing

From TikTok to email newsletters, businesses need help showing up online—and that’s where you come in. Digital marketing roles include social media management, content creation, email marketing, SEO support, and ad campaign assistance. Start by building sample campaigns to showcase your skills. Upskilling is crucial for expanding your opportunities, but you can do that with ease thanks to the abundance of e-training and certificate programs available for little to no cost. I’ve earned up to $2000 per month writing email campaigns for small businesses.

Rates: $20–$40/hour or $400–$1,500/month per client

Monthly potential: $1,500–$5,000+

Web Design

Web design is a lucrative remote skill that pairs creativity with technical skill. Tools like Wix, Squarespace, and WordPress make it accessible. Start by building your own site as a portfolio, then expand to clients. I know plenty of web designers who freelance on the side, and they work with clients in various locations.

Need help building a portfolio? Start with creating your own website to advertise your skills.

Beginner: $300–$10,000 per site

Monthly potential: $1,000–$10,000+

Beauty Services

While not digital, beauty services are highly portable. Braiders, stylists, nail techs, and massage therapists can rent chairs, offer house calls, or run pop-ups in expat-heavy cities. Demand is strong where specialized services are scarce. As an introvert and non-driver, I can’t express how much I appreciate house calls for beauty and wellness appointments. Assuming you have the skills or necessary certifications, you can start advertising your services on social media or in your very own community.

On-the-go services: $35–$500 per service

Monthly potential: $1,500–$5,000+ (varies by location)

Upskill: Cosmetology or niche certifications

Home and Babysitting

Platforms like Trusted House Sitters pair vetted travelers with homeowners. Many gigs offer free accommodation, while some pay for care. It’s ideal for slow travelers seeking immersion, as well as pet-lovers.

Babysitting is a side hustle countless students have mastered to earn money while studying. With the rise of childcare costs, you could ease the financial burden of hard-working parents by caring for their children. Word of mouth and flyers are tried and true methods for advertising your services.

Paid sits: $20–$120

Monthly potential: $600–$3,600 (plus housing savings up to $4,000 per month)

Dog Walking and Pet Sitting

Platforms like Rover allow animal lovers to connect with pets in their neighborhood. Services can range from dog walking to boarding in a sitter’s home or even dog training. As previously mentioned, certification isn’t necessary, but it builds trust and validates knowledge. A friend of mine employs a woman in her neighborhood to walk her two dogs for 30 minutes to an hour while she’s at work. She has a spare key and only enters the hallway (where the dog’s leash and other supplies are ready to go).

Dog walking: $15-$30 per hour*

Dog sitting: $35-$75 per night*

*Rover takes a 20% commission

Why Super Bowl surge may be muted for SF
A CoStar report says the market will benefit from the big game, but it may be more muted than it was 10 years ago.

https://www.hotelinvestmenttoday.com/Forecasts/Why-Super-Bowl-surge-may-be-muted-for-SF?

SAN FRANCISCO — While the San Francisco hotel market is expected to benefit from hosting the Super Bowl next February, forecasts are conservative compared to when the city hosted the event 10 years ago, which highlights the market’s struggles post-COVID, according to analysis from CoStar.

San Francisco last hosted the Super Bowl at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California, in 2016 and saw a significant lift in hotel performance with a reported 30% increase in RevPAR ($198), occupancy hitting 81%, and ADR climbing to $244.36. Those numbers jumped even higher over the weekend of the game in occupancy (82%), ADR ($453) and RevPAR ($370).

Because Levi’s Stadium sits about 40 miles from San Francisco’s downtown, the analysis said nearby cities such as San Jose benefited even more from the Super Bowl, with the city’s ADR surging 139% the day before the game and RevPAR increasing 162%.

While San Francisco hotels are expected to deliver strong results in February, the week of the game, the forecasts have been more muted this year. Room rates are projected to rise 37% year-over-year, which would fuel a 47% RevPAR increase. That increase would translate to an ADR of $293.69 and RevPAR of $192.81 for the month. While those numbers would be beneficial, they would reflect a 19% decrease in occupancy and a 3% decrease in RevPAR compared to 2016, while ADR would increase by 20%.

San Francisco has struggled as a market post-COVID. Still, there have been many signs of optimism this year that the hotel market is starting to rebound after bottoming out last year, as illustrated by a JLL study earlier this year. The study showed that the rebound was driven by improved convention center performance, a resurgence of international demand and big upcoming events. The burgeoning AI sector in the city also has many experts and investors optimistic about the city’s hospitality future.

The CoStar analysis said San Francisco has seen a strong rebound this year and is leading the top 25 U.S. markets through October year-to-date with impressive gains in occupancy (+4.9%), ADR (+5.9%) and RevPAR (+11.3%).

The analysis says supply can also play a key role in occupancy projections. For example, New Orleans, last year’s Super Bowl host city, saw a 51% RevPAR increase YOY and a nearly 96% actualized occupancy on game night, resulting in an ADR of $810. San Francisco has a supply roughly 20% larger than New Orleans (and a more spread-out area), which can make demand benefits harder to concentrate.
